Stan Wawrinka achieved his fourth ATP win of the season as he came from a set down to defeat Botic van de Zandschulp in the first-round of the Hellenic Championship in Athens. The former world number three broke the Dutchman’s serve for the first time deep in the third set to win 2-6 7-6 (5) 7-5.
He now faces top seed Lorenzo Musetti in the next round. After Felix Auger-Aliassime’s withdrawal from the Metz Open, the Italian knows he can qualify for the World Tour Finals in Turin next week if he wins this event. However, his form is not in great shape in terms of his recent results and he suffered an early exit at the Paris Masters after a three set defeat to fellow countryman Lorenzo Sonego.
Musetti leads the head-to-head 1-0 after defeating Wawrinka as an 18-year-old at the 2020 Italian Open. The Swiss veteran will be raring to go and could make it difficult in the early stages, with the Italian under pressure to perform due to the Tour Finals being on the line. It’s an awkward match for Musetti but he will be expected to outlast the three-time Grand Slam champion.
