Former champion Stan Wawrinka will aim to roll back the years when he makes his 15th appearance in Monte Carlo against Alejandro Tabilo.
The 40-year-old Swiss wildcard arrives in The Principality on the back of three wins in his last five with a quarter-final run at the Naples Challenger followed by a round of 16 loss to Pedro Martinez in Bucharest.
Tabilo may be 13 years younger than Wawrinka and ranked over 100 places higher, but he will be short of confidence after losing a tight match to Jenson Brooksby in Houston.
It was the Chilean’s fourth contest on clay this year and he has lost each of them. Indeed, the South American has won just two of his 11 outings in a so far underwhelming season and it suggests there is an opportunity for Stan The Man if the veteran can sustain his big serving and trademark venomous ball-striking for more than one set.
