Tournament number 17 seed Sorana Cirstea was left frustrated at Queen’s earlier this month with a round of 16 defeat to Emma Raducanu. She saw off Sara Bejlek with an impressive straight sets victory in the first round at Wimbledon the other day.
Kimberly Birrell comes into this second round on the back of a fairly bizarre three-set defeat of Alina Korneeva, with 6-3 and 6-2 set victories either side of a whitewash in the second set. Birrell qualified for both the Nottingham Open and the Eastbourne Open earlier this month.
The appearances at those tournaments has represented a positive time of it for Birrell but Sorana Cirstea has to be viewed as the firm favourite for this one.
