Sorana Cirstea advanced to the round-of-16 in Cleveland with a straight sets win over Moyuka Uchijima. The Romanian went a break down twice in the first set but recovered well and won six games in a row at one point to seal a 6-4 6-1 win after an hour and 18 minutes. Cirstea is seeking her fourth quarter-final of the season but will have to get past Jil Teichmann in the next round.
Teichmann defeated French Open semi-finalist Lois Boisson in the first-round. The 28-year-old took the first set but was uncompetitive in the second as Boisson won five games in a row to draw level. A topsy-turvy decider saw Teichmann establish a 4-1 lead, only for Boisson to break back and recover to make it 4-4. The 28-year-old broke again when Boisson was serving to stay in the match to win 6-4 1-6 6-4.
The head-to-head is 4-3 in Teichmann’s favour, and she’s also won their last four encounters. Nevertheless, Cirstea is riding high after her run to the fourth-round of the Cincinnati Open and is performing at a higher level than her opponent. She may just have the edge in this one.
