Sorana Cirstea made light work of her first-round match, defeating Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in straight sets. It was a fantastic performance from the Romanian, who converted all four of her break points and wasn’t broken on serve herself, as she wrapped up a 6-3 6-1 win after just an hour and one minute. Cirstea announced at the beginning of December that 2026, her 20th WTA season, will be her last on tour.
She faces Jelena Ostapenko in round two. The Latvian will be looking to get back on track in 2026 after a poor end to her previous season. There were highlights, as she won the title in Stuttgart, beating world number one Aryna Sabalenka in the final, while she also reached a WTA 1000 final in Doha.
Ostapenko leads the head-to-head 4-2 but Cirstea has won two of their last three meetings. The 35-year-old produced a strong level in her first-round match and will cause Ostapenko problems if she replicates that performance.
