Sorana Cirstea’s run in Beijing ended in the second-round as she lost to Karolina Muchova for the second time in just over a month. She was also defeated by world number two Iga Swiatek at the same stage of the Korea Open a week earlier. Cirstea enjoyed an incredible August, as she got through to the round-of-16 in Cincinnati and won a title in Cleveland, but her form has taken a noticeable dip since then. Nevertheless, the 35-year-old has won 20 of her 31 matches on outdoor hard courts this season.
Jelena Ostapenko’s downturn in form continued at the China Open as she was defeated by Priscilla Hon in straight sets. The Latvian has failed to win a match since her loss to Taylor Townsend in the second-round of the US Open. Ostapenko has still had a solid year, with a title in Stuttgart backed up by a final in Doha in the middle of February. However, her record on hard courts overall has seen her lose 13 of her 21 matches.
Ostapenko dominates the head-to-head, leading 4-1 and 3-0 on hard courts. However, Cirstea has been the better player over the last two months and has the game to defeat the out-of-form Latvian.
