Sorana Cirstea booked her place in the third-round of the Cincinnati Open with a straight sets win over Nikola Bartunkova. The Romanian was forced to work hard in the opening set, eventually coming through a closely fought tiebreak to move ahead. Having gained the advantage, Cirstea took greater control of proceedings in the second and secured the decisive break to complete a 7-6 (5) 6-3 win in just under two hours. This was her first victory in over a month.
She now takes on Anna Kalinskaya. The Russian set up a meeting with Cirstea after beating Caty McNally in straight sets. She recovered from an early break down in the first set, winning five of the next six games to take the lead. Kalinskaya broke on two more occasions in the second as she sealed a 6-3 6-4 victory. She converted five of her 10 break point opportunities.
Cirstea leads the overall head-to-head 2-1, but they have not met since 2023. There’s little to separate the pair, especially on the surface, and this could go all the way to a deciding set.
