Sorana Cirstea recorded yet another victory to reach the final of Tennis in the Land. The 35-year-old won in straight sets once again as she defeated Anastasia Zakharova in the semi-finals. Cirstea has not dropped a set in all six matches she’s played, including the two qualifying rounds. She raced ahead here, taking the first set with ease but the second was more hard going, with five breaks of serve. Nevertheless, Cirstea broke in the 11th service game and served it out to win 6-1 7-5.
Ann Li will be her opponent in the final as she defeated Xinyu Wang for the first time. A topsy-turvy encounter saw 11 breaks of serve overall. Li served for the match in set two at 5-4 up but Wang won five games in a row to level the match and go an early break up in the decider. The American showed great resolve to stem the tide and break back. She did not face a break point after that, going on to win 6-3 5-7 6-4.
Li is a fighter and will give Cirstea some problems at times, but it’s difficult to look past the Romanian given her run of form over the last couple of weeks.
