Sonay Kartal has competed in just one event since her brilliant run to the fourth-round of Wimbledon. It was not a successful one, as she lost in round one of the Cincinnati Open to Caroline Garcia despite taking the first set. Nevertheless, Kartal is still ranked inside the top 50 and will hope for a strong showing this week ahead of the US Open.
She begins her campaign against Solana Sierra. Sierra came out of nowhere as a lucky loser at Wimbledon last month, making it all the way to round four before a defeat to Laura Siegemund. She entered the Cincinnati Open as a lucky loser once again but was unable to make a deep run as she lost to 17-year-old Iva Jovic in the first-round.
