Sonay Kartal broke new ground in her career as she got through to the quarter-finals of a WTA 1000 event for the first time with an impressive win over world number five Mirra Andreeva. This was also the Brit’s first ever win against a top 10 player. She broke at the end of sets one and three to record a 7-5 2-6 7-5 win after two hours and 25 minutes.
She will face Linda Noskova in the last eight. She advanced from the round-of-16 after a straight sets win over Anastasia Potapova. The Czech was broken on three occasions but kept creating opportunities on Potapova’s serve as she won 6-2 6-4. The 20-year-old has enjoyed a strong campaign and is now into a seventh quarter-final of the season. She is yet to win a title this year, but her hard court form has been strong overall, with 20 wins from 33 matches on the surface.
This will be their first match on a hard court, but Noskova leads the head-to-head 1-0 after a straight sets win in Rome earlier this season. Despite Kartal’s performances, the Czech is well placed to come through this one in similar fashion.
