Sonay Kartal vs Belinda Bencic prediction

Sonay Kartal advanced to the next round in Wuhan after a straight sets win over Anhelina Kalinina. The Briton found herself 5-2 down in the first set but reeled off five games in a row to take the lead. Kartal controlled the second to complete a 7-5 6-3 win. She was out of action for a number of months due to a back injury, but she did win two matches at the China Open. Despite her ranking falling to outside of the world’s top 150, Kartal has looked sharp since returning, and she will be a tough second-round opponent for Belinda Bencic.

The Swiss lost to Ann Li last time out in Beijing. That was Bencic’s first event since the US Open, and her form has fallen off since withdrawing from the Canadian Open at the quarter-final stage back in August. She is still yet to progress to a semi-final in 2026, but remains inside the top 15 of the world rankings. 

Kartal is a dangerous opponent for Bencic, and the Brit has enough quality to trouble her opponent for at least a set.
