Solana Sierra edged a tight match with Great Britain’s Sonay Kartal to book her place into the round-of-16 in Cleveland. The Argentine established a 4-2 lead in the first set, but Kartal won four straight games in a row to take the lead. Nevertheless, Sierra regrouped well as she broke twice early in the second to draw level. Two early breaks were exchanged in the decider, with the set going to a tiebreak and Sierra winning six points in a row to win 4-6 6-4 7-6.
Elsa Jacquemot will be her next opponent after she comfortably defeated Zhu Lin 6-3 6-1. Jacquemot won 72% of her first serve points and broke the Chinese player’s serve on five separate occasions as she strolled into the next round.
This is their first WTA match against each other but Jacquemot leads the overall head-to-head 2-0, having beaten Sierra in the first-round of Australian Open qualifying last year and on the ITF Tour in Saint-Gaudens a few months later.
Sierra committed nine double faults in her last match and cannot afford the same number of errors against Jacquemot. The Frenchwoman looked at ease in the first-round and should start as the favourite here.
