Sofia Kenin overcame a scare as she defeated Anastasia Zakharova to make it through to the next round in Wuhan. Kenin lost the first set and was 5-4 down in the second set tiebreaker but won three points in a row to level the match up. She still had to overcome some difficulties in set three as she went a break down, but Kenin dug deep to win 3-6 7-6 6-3 after two hours and 13 minutes. Kenin will be seeking to win consecutive wins at a tournament for the first time since Roland Garros back in May.
She will now face Liudmila Samsonova. The 2023 finalist defeated Emiliana Arango to book a meeting with Kenin. It was a mostly dominant victory from the Russian, who broke on four separate occasions to win 6-1 7-5.
Kenin leads the head-to-head 2-0 but they have not played each other since the Qatar Open in early 2023. Both of these players will be desperate for a victory as they seek a strong end to the season, and this could go the full distance.
