Sloane Stephens produced a fine display in the first-round to beat Sinja Kraus at the Cincinnati Open. The American initially served for the opening set at 5-4, only for Kraus to break back. However, Stephens immediately regained the advantage and successfully served it out at the second attempt. She controlled the second to win 7-5 6-3 after an hour and 50 minutes.
Stephens now faces Anastasia Potapova for a place in the third-round. She won her opening match in Toronto against Elena-Gabriela Ruse, but then suffered a heavy defeat to Elina Svitolina, winning just two games in total. It’s been a strong year for the 25-year-old, with the highlights being a run to the semi-finals in Madrid and a runner-up finish at the Linz Open.
However, Potapova does have a negative win-loss record on outdoor hard court this season, and Stephens will have plenty of home support on her side for this one. She has enough quality to challenge Potapova at times.
