Shuai Zhang was able to pick up a couple of WTA 1000 wins in Toronto as she reached the third-round. She ended a seven-match losing run to Yulia Putintseva as she beat the Kazakh in straight sets, before another win in round two after Jelena Ostapenko was forced to retire. Despite being very competitive against world number one Aryna Sabalenka, the 37-year-old lost in straight sets. There were still positives for the Chinese player to take as she looks ahead to another big event.
She now faces Kayla Day at the Cincinnati Open. The American qualified for the Canadian Open and then came from a set down to beat Diane Parry in the first-round. She battled against two-time Grand Slam singles champion Coco Gauff but still lost in straight sets. Day continued the momentum with qualifying wins over Taylah Preston and Yue Yuan to enter the main draw here.
Day is competitive at this level, but Zhang will start as the favourite for this one.
