Shuai Zhang vs Katie Volynets prediction

Shuai Zhang raised her game as she came from a set and a break down to beat Veronika Erjavec and continue her progress in Guangzhou. Erjavec looked to be in control as she broke to go 3-2 up after taking the first set but Zhang increased her level, winning eight games in a row to level the match up and go 4-0 up in the decider as she completely turned the game on its head. She didn’t face a break point in the third set as she won 3-6 6-3 6-2.

Her next opponent is Katie Volynets. The American recorded a comfortable win in the round-of-16 against Tiantsoa Rakotomanga Rajaonah. The youngster had just won her first title on the WTA Tour, but Volynets broke twice early on to take a commanding lead. This dominance continued in the second set and she won 6-3 6-3 after one hour and 24 minutes. Volynets produced a first serve percentage of 85%.

They played on one previous occasion, with Zhang defeating Volynets 6-3 6-2 in the third-round of the Australian Open in 2023. This could prove to be a closer affair, with both looking to reach a WTA semi-final for the first time this season and may head into three set territory.
