Shuai Zhang vs Jelena Ostapenko prediction
Shuai Zhang ended a seven-match losing streak against Yulia Putintseva as she won her first-round match at the Canadian Open in straight sets. The 37-year-old raced clear in the second to win 6-4 6-1. Her best result of the season so far was a run to the semi-finals of the Merida Open.
She will now play Jelena Ostapenko, who received a bye in the first-round. The Latvian last featured at Wimbledon, losing to world number one Aryna Sabalenka in round three, though she did manage to pick up the mixed doubles title with Marcelo Arevalo. Her best previous WTA 1000 result this season was a quarter-final appearance at the Italian Open.
Ostapenko leads the head-to-head 2-0 and is yet to drop a set to Zhang, but they have not faced each other since 2019. The former French Open champion should be refreshed after some time away, and she is a strong favourite to win.
