Sho Shimabukuro notched up his best result on the ATP Tour during the grass court season, as he advanced from qualifying to the quarter-finals at the Stuttgart Open. He came from a set down to beat 2022 Wimbledon finalist Nick Kyrgios to set up a last eight meeting with Ben Shelton. Shimabukuro took the first set against the American, with Shelton coming back to win in three. Despite impressive displays prior to Wimbledon, he suffered a first-round defeat to Jaime Faria. He is ranked just inside the top 100 of the world rankings.
He will face Rodrigo Pacheco Mendez in round one. The 21-year-old received a wildcard to compete in the main draw of this event, and he will have home support on his side. He faced Flavio Cobolli in the first-round of the Mexican Open earlier in the year. He performed impressively, taking the Italian to two tiebreaks and narrowly losing, with Cobolli going on to win the tournament.
Shimabukuro will have to keep his composure in front of a partisan crowd, but he is a clear favourite to advance.
