Shintaro Mochizuki qualified for a second straight year at Wimbledon as he overcame Clement Tabur in a thrilling five set match. The Japanese player also advanced to the quarter-finals of an event in Nottingham on the Challenger Tour a week earlier, his best result of the season. Mochizuki progressed to the second-round at the All England Club last year and even came close to upsetting Karen Khachanov, taking him to a deciding set.
He will face Max Basing, with the Brit also qualifying for the tournament. He is set to make his Grand Slam main draw debut at the Championships. Basing is ranked outside of the top 300 in the world, but he does have two lower-level titles this season. In his final qualifying match, the 23-year-old defeated Remy Bartola in five sets.
Mochizuki’s greater experience could prove to be the difference here, and he is the favourite to advance to the next round.
