Shintaro Mochizuki picked up a brilliant victory in the round-of-16 as he brushed aside fourth seed Luciano Darderi in straight sets. Despite their disparity in ranking, with the Italian at 26 in the world and Mochizuki at 102, along with Darderi building a 3-1 lead in the first set, Mochizuki responded with three successive breaks of his own to take a commanding lead. He broke in the middle of the second and did not even give up a break point in the set overall, as he won 6-3 6-3.
He now faces Alex Michelsen. The American, who had lost his last five matches prior to the event, easily defeated Aleksandar Vukic to make the last eight of a tournament for the first time since the Canadian Open. Michelsen did not concede a break point throughout the match as he won 6-3 6-2.
Mochizuki is likely to be a tough match for Michelsen, but the 21-year-old seems to have found some form again and will be the favourite to win.
