The Austrian had looked to be finding real form following injury, but four defeats in a row leave him needing a pick-me-up in Cincinnati.
The world number 141 takes on Valentin Royer, who sits 30 places better off than the Swiss heading into their maiden meeting.
Royer’s rise up the rankings has largely been achieved by his form at Challenger level and he is mainly at his best on clay.
