Sebastian Ofner enters the Madrid draw under a protected ranking but with limited expectations following a seven-month absence from the tour.

The Austrian returned to action in March with mixed fortunes in a series of Challengers on clay but a tussle with maverick Hugo Gaston could prove a bridge too far at this stage of his comeback.

The Frenchman defeated Yannick Hanfmann and Luca Nardi in qualifying to end a run of thee straight defeats that saw him fail to make the main draw in Monte Carlo and Barcelona.

This will be their first tussle at tour level, but below that tier they have battled on three occasions with Ofner leading the match-up 2-1, although the contests on clay have been split. 

If a sometimes erratic Gaston doesn’t beat himself, he should have too much in terms of recent match pedigree for the Austrian.
