Sebastian Ofner returned mid-season following heel surgery and made a breakthrough in Geneva as he reached the semi-finals, beating Karen Khachanov and Nuno Borges along the way. He also reached the third-round of Wimbledon for the first time since 2017. However, he has struggled to gain traction during the North American hard court swing and lost in the first-round of Winston-Salem, his most recent event.
Casper Ruud captured his first Masters 1000 title in Madrid earlier this year but an injury sustained at the French Open kept him out of action for nearly two months. He reached the fourth-round in Toronto but fell to an early loss in Cincinnati to Arthur Rinderknech in three sets.
The Norwegian leads the head-to-head 2-0 but this will be their first match on a hard court. He’s not at his best on this surface, despite his run to the final three years ago, but his experience and consistent baseline game should be too much for Ofner.
