The American reached the quarter-finals of the Dallas Open before an unfortunate and hard-fought defeat to Taylor Fritz.
Casper Ruud is some way off his former best self but he will believe he has a real chance at this tournament. The Norwegian was again unconvincing the other day as he came from a set down to edge past Marcos Giron. Ruud hasn’t played since his four-set loss to Ben Shelton at the Australian Open last month.
Casper Ruud was the world number two three and a half years ago but it has been a steady regression since then and, while favourite in an ATP 250 event, his decline is such that it will not be straightforward for the 27-year-old.
