Sebatian Baez advanced to his second semi-final of the season after getting past compatriot Camilo Ugo Carabelli. A topsy-turvy first set saw Baez break early to establish a 4-1 lead, only for Ugo Carabelli to reel off four games in a row and serve for the set. Nevertheless, he was broken and Baez went on to take it on a tiebreak. He dominated the second to win 7-6 (5) 6-2.
He now goes up against Luciano Darderi. He produced a brilliant display to beat Pedro Martinez in straight sets. Darderi was not broken on serve as he wrapped up a 7-5 6-1 win after one hour and 31 minutes. The second seed reached the round-of-16 at the Australian Open last month, his best result at a slam, and he’s not been troubled in his first two matches.
Baez leads the head-to-head 4-3 but it’s 3-3 on clay, while Darderi has won their last two meetings. They faced each other in Melbourne a few weeks ago, with the Italian winning in four sets to make it through to round three. Both players have made strong starts to the season, but Darderi will be viewed as the slight favourite to make it through to another final on clay.
