Sebastian Baez picked up his first victory in eight matches as he battled past 18-year-old Nicolai Budkov Kjaer in the previous round. Kjaer had won his first match on the ATP Tour this week and caused plenty of problems for the Argentine, even serving for the match at 5-4. Nevertheless, Baez broke back and reeled off three straight games to win 3-6 6-2 7-5 and end his losing run.
Luciano Darderi broke twice early on in both sets to easily get past Elias Ymer 6-2 6-2 in the round-of-16. He faced just two break points during the match. Baez leads the head-to-head 4-1 and 3-1 on clay, defeating Darderi in the quarter-finals of Hamburg last year, their most recent match against each other on clay.
However, despite his victory, Baez still looked out-of-sorts at times and was close to continuing his winless streak against someone with just one victory to their name on the ATP Tour. Darderi has already beaten him before on the surface and will fancy his chances.
