Sebastian Baez wasn’t at his best and made hard work of his second-round rain-interrupted match against Gabriel Diallo, but eventually advanced through to the quarter-finals with a 7-5 2-6 6-2 win.
The Argentine will have to up his game when he faces compatriot Francisco Comesana, who came from a set down in the final set to defeat Spanish fifth seed Roberto Bautista Agut 6-4 3-6 6-3 in two hours and 11 minutes.
These two faced each other a little over a month ago at the round of 16 stage at the Chile Open, the only match in the head-to-head, with Baez winning a tight contest 6-3 5-7 7-5 on his way to reaching the final.
The number one seed was still able to fashion a number of break point opportunities on Comesana’s serve during that match in late February, and his strong and reliable defensive game on clay could give him the edge once more.
We think a similar result could transpire in Bucharest, with a much-improved Baez once again having just enough to defeat his compatriot and advance through to the semi-finals.
