In the battle of the previous champions at the event, 2023 winner Sebastian Baez defeated 2016 champion Pablo Carreno Busta in straight sets to advance to the next round. This was Baez’s best performance in months, but he still had to overcome some difficult moments in the first set. He was broken in both of his first two service games as the Spaniard built up a lead, but he fought back to take the set. A more straight-forward second saw him hold serve and race clear to win 7-5 6-2.
He will now go up against Botic van de Zandschulp who continued his unbeaten run against Matteo Arnaldi in the previous round. It was plain sailing for the Dutchman, who broke Arnaldi three times, did not face a break point himself and won 89% of his first serve points as he completed a 6-3 6-3 win after an hour and 32 minutes.
Apart from his display in the first set against Adam Walton, Van de Zandschulp has performed at a very solid level in this tournament so far and we expect him to get the job done against Baez if he can replicate his second-round performance.
