Sara Bejlek produced a fine display as she beat compatriot and two-time Grand Slam singles champion Barbora Krejcikova in straight sets to advance at the Cincinnati Open. Bejlek defended brilliantly throughout and forced errors from her opponent as she wrapped up a 7-6 (5) 6-4 victory. She is into the third-round of a WTA tournament for the first time in two years.
Ekaterina Alexandrova will be her next opponent after the Russian got past Anna Blinkova in the second-round. Alexandrova went a set down and struggled to hold serve throughout the match, but she eventually came through to win 6-7 (5) 6-4 7-5 after two hours and 40 minutes.
This is a rematch of this year’s Abu Dhabi Open final, which saw Bejlek beat Alexandrova in straight sets to win her first tour-level title. She will have the psychological edge after that victory, while she was also the more convincing of the two players in the previous round.
