Roman Safiullin vs Ugo Blanchet prediction
Roman Safiullin has not competed on the tour since his first-round loss at Wimbledon to Luciano Darderi. The Russian was two sets to one up but could not close the match against Darderi, losing in five sets. This would have been a disappointment for Safiullin, who reached the quarter-finals in 2022. He’s been in very poor form this season and has eight losses from his last nine matches.
He takes on Ugo Blanchet in the first-round of the Canadian Open. The Frenchman is through to the main draw after defeating Chun-Hsin Tseng 6-4 7-5 in the only stage of qualifying. Blanchet is another who is struggling in terms of his recent performances. He failed to make it out of Wimbledon qualifying and then followed that up with early defeats on the Challenger Tour in Trieste and San Marino, while he lost in the first stage of qualifying in Umag last week.
Safiullin is ranked comfortably higher than Blanchet and will be the favourite, but neither player is performing to the best of their abilities right now, and that could lead to a scrappy encounter which is low on quality.
