Roman Safiullin held off a Gael Monfils fightback in the deciding set to win a thriller in the first-round of the US Open. The 39-year-old forced a fifth set and came from a break down to go 4-3 up, but the Russian reeled off three straight games to win 6-4 2-6 6-1 3-6 6-4. This was his first victory at a major this season.
He will now go up against Felix Auger-Aliassime in round two. The Canadian defeated Great Britain’s Billy Harris in straight sets to get his campaign off and running. Auger-Aliassime still struggled at times, being pegged back in both the first and third sets and needing to stave off two set points in the second set tiebreak, but he still came through to win 6-4 7-6 6-4. The Canadian will hope to reduce his unforced error count in the next round, having made 45 in the first-round despite not dropping a set.
Auger-Aliassime leads the head-to-head 1-0 after beating Safiullin in Marseille three years ago on the way to his first title on the ATP Tour. Safiullin’s resilience to grind out long rallies will challenge the Canadian, but fatigue after a five setter may blunt his effectively. Auger-Aliassime has the stronger offensive weapons but is also prone to lapses.
