Roman Safiullin vs Christopher O’Connell prediction

Roman Safiullin reached the second-round of both Masters events in Toronto and Cincinnati, losing to top 15 players Casper Ruud and Holger Rune in the two respective tournaments.  Despite an average season, the Russian has still made it past the first-round of all hard court Masters tournaments, including a third-round appearance in Miami which stands as his best result on the ATP Tour this season.

Christopher O’Connell has not featured on the tour since pulling out of the Canadian Open before his third-round match with compatriot Alex de Minaur could take place. That was a blow for O’Connell, considering he picked up one of the best wins of his career in the previous round against former world number three and two time Grand Slam finalist Stefanos Tsistipas.

O’Connell’s lack of fitness increases the uncertainty around him ahead of this one, while Safiullin did show some encouraging signs in Cincinnati as he pushed Rune all the way in both sets. The Russian is good value to come through this.
