Roman Safiullin vs Casper Ruud prediction

Roman Safiullin edged a tight first-round match against Ugo Blanchet, saving a match point in the deciding tiebreak as he came from a set down to win 4-6 6-2 7-6. The Russian has struggled for the majority of the season but can still be a threat in outdoor hard court tournaments, evidenced by a string of victories at the Miami Open.

His next opponent is three-time Grand Slam finalist Casper Ruud. Ruud competed in his first tournament for nearly two months in Gstaad a fortnight ago. Despite being the top seed and a two-time winner, Ruud lost in the quarter-finals to Juan Manuel Cerundolo despite going a double break up in the decider. He has not particularly impressed this season, aside from his maiden Masters 1000 victory in Miami, but he did reach a final on hard courts in Dallas earlier in the year.

There are question marks over Ruud as he continues his recovery from injury, but he will still be an overwhelming favourite to defeat world number 82 Safiullin in the second-round.
