Roman Andres Burruchaga advanced to the next stage of the Rio Open after a straight sets win over compatriot Camilo Ugo Carabelli. Burruchaga, who has just moved into the top 100 of the rankings for the first time, was always in control as he wrapped up a 6-3 6-4 win over the fifth seed. His South American clay court swing has seen him make the final of the Rosario Challenger, while he also got through to the round-of-16 of the Argentina Open last week.

He now faces Vit Kopriva. The Czech defeated Gustavo Heide in straight sets. Kopriva won the first four games of the match as he easily took the first set. He opened up a 4-2 lead in the second, but Heide fought back and forced a tiebreak. Nevertheless, Kopriva would come through to win 6-2 7-6 (5).

Both players have impressed in recent weeks, with Kopriva making the last eight in Buenos Aires this week. There is also little to separate the pair in the rankings, and this should be a hard-fought encounter.
