Roman Andres Burruchaga produced a strong performance to defeat an out of sorts Lorenzo Sonego 6-2 6-3 in the first-round. The Argentine now has six wins from his past seven matches including qualifying and should be able to take that momentum with him when he takes on Karen Khachanov.
Khachanov’s best finish of his three events on clay over the past month was a semi-final appearance at the Barcelona Open, which included an impressive straight sets win against an in-form Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. Unfortunately for the Russian, he ran into an inspired Holger Rune in the last four, with the Dane winning 6-3 6-2 and then going on to win the tournament.
Khachanov received a bye in the first-round of Madrid last time out but won only one match at the event as he lost to Tommy Paul in the third-round 6-3 3-6 6-2. The Russian’s power game and experience should see him over the line against Burruchaga but he should be wary of his opponent’s recent form on the surface.
