Roberton Carballes Baena started his clay court season with a decent showing in Marrakech as he reached the semi-finals before a straight sets loss to Luciano Darderi. He was unable to replicate any of that form at the Barcelona Open as he lost to Jacob Fearnley in the first-round. The Spaniard pulled out of Madrid after suffering from a hip problem, so he makes his return here.

Sebastian Ofner made two quarter-finals at Challenger events at the beginning of April and did win his first-round match in the main draw at the Madrid Open. He defeated Hugo Gaston pretty comfortably but came unstuck against American Brandon Nakashima. He battled hard in the second set but couldn’t force a decider and lost 6-3 7-6. Ofner is still continuing to recover after an Achilles tendon injury curtailed his 2024 campaign early.

They have played once before at the Auckland Open at the beginning of last year, with Carballes Baena winning in straight sets. There are question marks concerning Carballes Baena’s fitness heading into this one and his form seems to have taken a dip. We think Ofner is due an impressive win and it could come here.
