Roberto Carballes Baena last competed in Umag last week, losing to Nikoloz Basilashvili in round one. A week earlier, he could only reach the second-round in Gstaad before a defeat to Francisco Comesana. His best result on a hard court this season came at the start of the year in Auckland, as he reached the quarter-finals.

Camilo Ugo Carabelli is in better form; having made back-to-back semi-finals in the clay court events he’s competed in after Wimbledon. That makes it five last four appearances in total for the Argentine, along with a Rosario Challenger win, though they were all on his favoured clay. His record on hard courts is far less impressive, though he did manage a third-round appearance at the Miami Open in March.

Though it isn’t his strongest surface, Ugo Carabelli has enjoyed a far stronger season than his Spanish opponent and will be viewed as the favourite when they lock horns in Toronto.
