Roberto Bautista Agut advanced to the next round after his opponent Christopher O’Connell retired midway through their match. The Spaniard had just taken the first set 6-4 when the Australian withdrew from the contest. 

He will now face Marton Fucsovics as he defeated Tallon Griekspoor for the fourth time in a row. The Hungarian started the stronger of the two and went a set and a break up, only for Griekspoor to reel off four games in a row and take the match into a decider. Fucsovics was superb in the third set, as he did not face a break point on his serve and broke Griekspoor in the sixth service game to win 6-3 4-6 6-3.

Bautista Agut leads the head-to-head 3-2 but it’s 1-1 on outdoor hard court. Their last two matches have been on the surface, both at the Qatar Open. Bautista Agut won the first match in 2023, while Fucsovics defeated the Spaniard a year later in straight sets.

There’s little to separate these two on this surface, as shown by their record against each other, but Bautista Agut has been in decent form over the last few months and should rightfully start as the favourite to win.
