Roberto Bautista Agut is set to make his final Wimbledon appearance, having signalled his intention to retire earlier this season. His best result was a semi-final appearance in 2019, which saw him lose to Novak Djokovic. The Spaniard has lost five of his last six matches, and failed to qualify for the Halle Open last time out after a defeat to Raphael Collignon.
Joao Fonseca struggled in Halle, losing heavily to Yannick Hanfmann in his first-round match. That was the teenager’s first match since his quarter-final defeat at Roland Garros to Jakub Mensik. The Brazilian reached the third-round on his SW19 debut last year, but he will be pretty short of match practice heading into this year’s edition.
Fonseca should still have more than enough against a fading Bautista Agut in this first-round match, but his current level on grass is a bit of an unknown after that poor display against Hanfmann 10 days ago.
