Roberto Bautsita Agut’s season begins at the Auckland Open. The Spanish veteran, who is now 37, is ranked 90 in the world. There were a number of early exits for Bautista Agut in 2025, though there were flashes of the level that saw him reach the top 10 of the world rankings in 2019 as he made the semi-finals at Queen’s Club, beating Holger Rune along the way.
His first-round opponent is Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard. The Frenchman got his season off to a fine start in Brisbane as he defeated former world number eight Tommy Paul in three sets to make it through to the next stage. He then came from a set down to beat Rinky Hijikata but his run would end in the quarter-finals against Aleksandar Kovacevic.
Mpetshi Perricard’s serve was at its fearsome best last week in Brisbane and Bautista Agut is likely to encounter problems if his return game isn’t firing from the off.
