Renata Zarazua produced one of the upsets of the first round when she defeated an error-strewn Madison Keys in three gruelling sets.

The Mexican outlasted the Australian Open champion 6-7 (10-12), 7-6 (7-3), 7-5 to record her first ever win over a top-ten player. Something of a late bloomer in her career, Zarazua has now featured in the last eight Grand Slams, having only made one appearance in a singles major prior to that.

Diane Parry defeated an emotional Petra Kvitova, the two-time Wimbledon champion’s final match before retirement, 6-1, 6-0 in the first round. The Frenchwoman has never gone beyond the second round in New York, and has lost both her previous matches against Zarazua.

Parry barely had to get out of second gear against Kvitova but knows she has a fight on her hands against an opponent who has just eliminated one of the leading players in the women’s game. Expect a close battle here which could well go to a deciding set.
