Reilly Opelka began his 2026 campaign with a victory over Dane Sweeny in the first-round of the Brisbane International. However, the American, who reached the final of the event in the previous season, lost a tight second-round match to Kamil Majchrzak despite holding match points.
Alexei Popyrin suffered an early exit at the same event, losing to Quentin Halys in the first-round despite taking the first set. That made it five consecutive defeats for the Australian stretching back to last season. His last win came in round one of the US Open all the way back in August.
Popyrin seems to still be in a slump after ending his 2025 season early due to a back injury. Opelka will be a challenge, but if the 2024 Canadian Open champion can get to grips with his opponent’s huge serve, he will create opportunities for himself to win.
