The Chinese player had beaten Masarova earlier this month at the Transylvania Open, but the roles were reversed here as the Swiss broke serve on four occasions to win 6-3 6-2 after just one hour and six minutes. It was a strong serving performance from Masarova, as she produced a first serve percentage of 76% and won 80% of those points.
She faces Whitney Osuigwe in the next round. The American came from a set down to defeat Elizabeth Mandlik. She dominated the deciding set to win 2-6 6-3 6-1 after two hours and five minutes.
Both players had to qualify for this event and have now won three matches in a row. If Masarova puts in a similar display, she will give herself a brilliant chance of making a first WTA quarter-final of the season.
