Rebecca Sramkova eased into the next round of the Monterrey Open after a 6-0 6-3 win over world number 420 Veronica Rodriguez. She won the first seven games of the match and was not broken throughout the match as she wrapped up a very comfortable victory.
Leylah Fernandez is her opponent next as the Canadian registered her first victory since winning the Washington Open last month. Fernandez crashed out early on in Montreal and Cincinnati but was not to be denied this time, as she beat Jaqueline Cristian 6-3 7-5 without even facing a break point.
The 22-year-old is a two-time winner of this event and will want another deep run here ahead of the US Open, where she finished as runner up in 2021. Sramkova will be a tougher test and there’s little to separate the two in terms of ranking, but Fernandez is one of the favourites for this event and should be classed as a clear favourite.
