Raphael Collignon made a fine start at the European Open as he defeated fellow Belgian Zizou Bergs in straight sets. Bergs had just made his first Masters 1000 quarter-final in Shanghai, but Collignon started the match strongly and took a decisive lead. He served for the match at 5-4 in the second, only for Bergs to break back, but he still sealed victory in the tiebreak to win 6-4 7-6. This result backed up his strong displays on the Challenger Tour in recent weeks, having reached the final in Orleans and another semi-final.

Francisco Comesana is his next opponent, and he has already beaten a Belgian in the competition after getting past David Goffin in round one. He won the first set on a tiebreak after failing to serve it out at 5-4, before breaking late in the second to win 7-6 6-4.

Collignon has momentum on his side after strong previous results in the last few weeks, and he will also be desperate to perform in front of a home crowd once more.
