Rafael Jodar picked up a victory on his Wimbledon debut as he beat British wildcard Felix Gil in straight sets. The Spaniard, who had never competed in a grass court event before this week, was dominant from the start as he recorded a 6-3 7-5 7-5 victory. This was his first match since reaching the quarter-finals at Roland Garros.
Jodar defeated Pablo Carreno Busta en route to the last eight in Paris, and he will face his compatriot once more in the second-round at the All England Club. Carreno Busta ended his long wait for a first Wimbledon victory at the eighth attempt, with first-round opponent Denis Shapovalov having to retire. The 34-year-old, who made his first appearance at SW19 in 2014, was leading 6-3 7-6 (7) when the Canadian decided that he could not continue.
It was not all plain sailing for Jodar in their match at the French Open, as he had to come from two sets down to win. He still lacks a lot of experience on grass, and this could be another battle.
