Rafael Jodar outlasted Matteo Arnaldi in three sets as he reached the round-of-16 on his Italian Open debut. The Spaniard largely dominated the first set but was pegged back in the second, as Arnaldi forced a decider. The Italian looked on course for yet another win, but Jodar roared back, winning the final five games from 3-1 down to win 6-1 4-6 6-3, ending Arnaldi’s seven-match winning run.
His next opponent is Learner Tien. The American won his first match on clay over a top 50 opponent as he beat Alexander Bublik in three sets. Tien was initially broken when serving for the match at 5-4 in the third set, but he broke again in the very next service game and went on to win 4-6 6-3 7-5.
This is an exciting encounter between two of the most exciting players in the men’s game, but Jodar clearly has the edge on clay, and he will start as a firm favourite to reach his second Masters quarter-final in succession.
