Rafael Jodar picked up his first victory on a hard court against a top 20 opponent as he recovered from losing the first set to beat Lorenzo Musetti. Jodar was largely uncompetitive at the beginning of the match as Musetti opened up a convincing lead, but the 19-year-old turned things around to win 1-6 6-1 6-4. He will enter the top 20 of the world rankings for the first time next week.
He now faces Alejandro Tabilo after he pulled off an upset by coming from a set down to beat second seed Ben Shelton. The Chilean was down three break points at 4-4 in the second set but saved all of them and forced a decider. The 29-year-old trailed by a break in the third but won four of the last five games to seal a 4-6 7-5 6-4 victory.
They faced each other for the first time at Indian Wells earlier this year, with Tabilo cruising to a 6-1 6-2 win. Jodar was only a wildcard at that event, but he has already made huge improvements over the last four months. He will be the favourite to win, but Tabilo has been rewarded for the fearless tennis he has shown so far this week.
