Quentin Halys continued his progress in Brisbane as he advanced to the round-of-16 after a fine win over Alexei Popyrin. He dropped the first set, but was not broken on serve after that, breaking at the start of sets two and three to win 5-7 6-3 6-4. Halys struggled last season throughout the year, but he picked up a fine victory in the first-round and will want to continue his progress here.
He takes on Brandon Nakashima in the next round. The American produced a strong display in the first-round, defeating Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in straight sets. Nakashima went an early break up in the first set but was pegged back, though still went ahead after a tiebreak. He broke in the second to win 7-6 (4) 6-4.
