The Frenchman, who won a title in Kitzbuhel last month, found himself 5-3 down in the opening set but broke back as Kopriva served to take it. He then won the tiebreak and broke twice in the second to win 7-6 (5) 6-4 after one hour and 47 minutes.
He faces Alex de Minaur next. The Australian’s difficult season continued at the Canadian Open as was beaten by Cameron Norrie in the third-round. De Minaur led by a set and a double break as he served for the match twice, but he doubled faulted on match point, with Norrie coming back from the brink to win in three sets.
De Minaur does not have a strong record at this event, with his best result being a third-round appearance seven years ago. Halys also leads the head-to-head 2-0, and he will be confident after such an impressive winning run.
